THE LOVE CATS – Asbury Lanes, NJ 6/7/08 and The Highline Ballroom 6/27/08

by Deborah J. Draisin

The Love Cats are a Cure cover band featuring Pete Steinkopf and Michael McDermott of The Bouncing Souls, Andrew Everding of Thursday, Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance, DJ Values of Let It Burn and Matt Scarra of Pitch Black Blonde.
I caught a couple of gigs that The Love Cats put on during the month of June. For those of us who are actually old enough to remember when The Cure released “Three Imaginary Boys” in 1979, watching some of the raddest punk dudes in the industry channel the look and feel of a vintage Cure show was quite the cathartic experience.
DJ does a wicked Robert Smith – sweater in summer and all. Smoke machines and dark lighting combine to create an eerie effect as the double keys (played by Andrew and Matt) echo throughout the club. The crowd was responsive – singing and swaying along as Pete and DJ on guitar engaged them. Frank on bass and Mike on drums provided an energetic and full-bodied background to a set which ended way too soon for this journalist.
Good authority has it that there will be more of these to come, so keep an eye out for them.
