The
Professional Againsters - A Few Notes on Darwin
Usually when you read the liner notes (you
do read the liner notes, don’t you?),
and you come across song titles like “Frankenhooker,”
“God Wants You to Die,” “Krispie
Kreme,” and one of the best song titles
ever, “ (Bring Me the Head of) Radiohead,”
you know it’s either going to be a real
drag, or some of the most imaginative songs
you’re ever going to hear.
A Few Notes on Darwin offers 13
tales of lunatic madness, and tongue-in-cheek-humor
which is punctuated with some fine punk rock.
As the afore mentioned song titles are part
of what makes the music grand, open, old-school
punk rock whose rhythmic power adds depth,
making the band’s signature sound more
accessible and unique.
The record never drifts into mediocrity,
as the band injects snappy, sing-along choruses
as in “ADD Boy.”- These guys are
wicked cool! You never know want to expect
from song to song, but after repeated exposure
the band’s sophisticated wit, major
cleverness, and solid punk power will ignite
your passion for music.
I don’t think The Againsters will outgrow
their bratty sense of humor, and that’s
a good thing! They leave poetry to the artsy
types and instead write incisive, captivating
stories about getting their “Krispie
Kreme “ fix, or how boring Radiohead
can be. This is not going to be a short-lived
band. Not as long as we can continue to laugh
at ourselves and some of the shit that’s
goes on in life. - Phil Rainone
